The Alexander “Alec” G. Gray, Jr. Scholarship
The Alexander G. Gray, Jr. Scholarship is awarded annually by the Massachusetts LGBTQ Bar Association to one current second, third, or fourth year law student who demonstrates a commitment to and involvement in the LGBTQ community, leadership, maturity, and responsibility. The scholarship is used to defray the costs associated with law school, such as tuition, fees, books, and similar school-related expenses.
Alexander “Alec” G. Gray, Jr. was a dynamic and important contributor to the work of the Mass. LGBTQ Bar. He served on the Board from 2002 until 2005. He was an energetic participant in the Bar’s mentor program and was serious about mentoring LGBTQ law students and new lawyers. He developed lasting relationships with his mentees, formal and informal. Alec will long be remembered for his dedication to public service, his advocacy on behalf of children, and his deep commitment to all that he undertook. In his legal career, Alec remained dedicated to public service in Massachusetts. He served as an Assistant Attorney General, General Counsel to the Department of Social Services (now the Department of Children and Families), Executive Director of the Adoption Center, Chief Operating Officer of Concord-Assabet Family and Adolescent Services, and General Counsel to the Trial Court. Alec died in 2005 after a brief and courageous struggle with melanoma. This Scholarship honors Alec’s outstanding work as a lawyer and his dedication to the Mass. LGBTQ Bar—particularly his mentorship of new lawyers.
